La Gorce

The golf-course streets of North Beach, and the gated island behind them — one of the few parts of Miami Beach where a family house, not a tower, is the point.

La Gorce runs along the western side of Miami Beach north of 51st Street, wrapped around the golf course that gives it its name. It belongs to the North Beach side of the city, and it is one of the few addresses on the barrier island where the housing stock is still detached family homes rather than condominium towers.

The center of it is La Gorce Country Club. The course was laid out by the English amateur Herbert Tippet and opened in 1927, named for the National Geographic editor John Oliver La Gorce; more than two million cubic yards of Biscayne Bay were dredged to build it. It was redesigned by Robert Trent Jones in 1953 and again by Jack Nicklaus in the 1990s, and the club also keeps six tennis courts, a pool, croquet and a fitness center.

Behind the club sits La Gorce Island — gated, guarded, reached by a single bridge, and consistently among the most expensive addresses in Miami Beach. The streets on the mainland side, La Gorce Drive among them, trade for less but share the same schools, the same water access and the same ten minutes to both the ocean and the causeways.

Buying in La Gorce

Inventory here is thin — in a neighborhood of a few hundred houses, a handful trade in a year, and the good ones move quietly. Tell us what you are looking for before you start watching the portals, and we will tell you what is coming.

Selling in La Gorce

A La Gorce house is priced against its own street, not against Miami Beach as a whole: the distance to the water, which side of the club you sit on, and whether the lot can take a rebuild all move the number materially. We will walk the property with you before anything is listed.
